POLYGON ART
This piece is a low poly vector illustration of Gollum, the iconic character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.“ Using geometric shapes and a carefully selected color palette, I’ve tried to capture Gollum’s distinctive features and emaciated form in a modern, stylized manner.
Technical Approach
The illustration was created entirely with vector shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I broke Gollum’s form into geometric polygons, primarily triangles and quadrilaterals. This Low poly technique allowed me to simplify complex curves and textures while maintaining the essence of character.
Color Palette
The palette is built on a sophisticated monochromatic scheme that leans heavily into the blue-gray spectrum. The limited use of pure white creates a striking contrast against the predominantly dark values, while the mid-tones provide subtle gradation that gives the piece its dimensional quality. The careful balance of cool tones creates the mysterious, cave-dwelling atmosphere that defines the character.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges was balancing detail with the minimalist low poly style. I solved this by using smaller polygons in crucial areas like the face and hands, while larger shapes make up the body and background.
Impact and Application
This piece demonstrates my ability to adapt complex characters into a modern, graphic style suitable for various applications, from digital media to print. It showcases my skills in vector illustration, color theory, and creative reinterpretation of well-known subjects.
